West Efford Farm is a new-build dwelling nestled within the Devon Redlands, a National Character Area distinguished by its deep red sandstone geology and fertile soil. The design reimagines traditional agricultural forms, drawing inspiration from the region’s historic farmsteads and the locally distinctive linhay—a Devon-exclusive barn. The scheme sensitively integrates into a landscape of sunken lanes, hedgebanks, and post-medieval enclosures, creating a contemporary building deeply inspired by the local rural heritage.
The architecture comprises two distinct wings: a living wing and a service wing, arranged to echo the orthogonal layouts of local farmsteads. The living wing features a dramatic glulam cruck frame, referencing the exposed timber structures of historic linhays. This includes south-facing glazing to maximize passive solar gain and frame panoramic views of the Raddon Hills. In contrast, the service wing adopts a robust, earth-toned materiality, with cob walls and a brown roof mirroring the site’s hedgebanks.
Collaborations with a local glulam manufacturer and university underscore the commitment to low-carbon construction, utilizing locally sourced timber and revitalised cob techniques. A comprehensive landscaping strategy restores hedgerows, reintroduces native species, and enhances biodiversity, ensuring the design not only respects but regenerates its setting.
