Freefolk House is a substantial new country home nestled within a 50-acre rural estate. The project reimagines traditional country living through a contemporary lens, balancing timeless elegance with modern sustainability. Situated on a sloping hilltop, the design sensitively frames three mature oak trees while capitalising on panoramic views across the undulating landscape.
The architecture is organised into a series of articulated blocks and terraces, ensuring the home sits comfortably within its setting. A restrained material palette of locally sourced brick and stone nods to the region’s vernacular, providing tonal harmony and historical resonance. Internally, one of the most striking features is the oval shaped entrance hall which is intended to house a cantilevered stone staircase. The form of this space has been derived from traditional rules of proportion and the golden ratio.
Sustainability is central to the design, with a fabric-first approach, integrated solar arrays, and high thermal performance ensuring minimal environmental impact. The house replaces a former demolished dwelling, addressing past planning challenges by adopting an informal, low-profile aesthetic that respects the rural character.
