Springview Quarry is a proposed dwelling set within a former lime works quarry, designed to meet the highest standards of architectural innovation and environmental sensitivity. The site, nestled within the Chilterns AONB, presented a unique opportunity to restore and enhance a historically industrial landscape while creating a home of exceptional quality.
The design draws inspiration from the quarry’s defining characteristics—its dramatic chalk face, horizontal flint lines, and layered vegetation ledges. The building is organised into a series of solid, sculptural ‘marker blocks’ connected by glazed link spaces, creating a dynamic interplay between mass and transparency. These blocks are carefully positioned to frame views of the quarry face and surrounding woodland, while their materiality—chalky bricks, knapped flint, and lime mortar—reflects the site’s geological and vernacular heritage.
Enhancing biodiversity is central to the project, the extensive use of green roofs, planters, and wildlife habitats provide habitats integrated into the architecture. The landscaping strategy restores lost woodland belts, reintroduces rare species such as the Chiltern Gentian, providing cohesion between the building and its natural setting.
