Birdingbury is a contemporary home which replaces a dilapidated agricultural barn. The site is a narrow plot divided by a public footpath. The external design intends to present two faces: a set of simple agricultural type forms clad in suitable materials where visible from the footpath, and a more expressive and open side where the building is concealed from the public realm, allowing for southerly long distance views to an ancient woodland.
The interior layout of this property is tailored to suit the varying special educational needs of the family’s four children. The design has been created in accordance with the ‘ASPECTSS Design Index’, an evidence based set of design guidelines intended to create built environments better suited to individuals with autism. The principles set out in the guidelines have been shown to have benefits for all users of spaces which have been developed with the index in mind. Applying this process to a smaller project to create a bespoke family home was a rewarding experience which hoped to keep all family members and their long term needs as a key design driver.
